ADVANTAGES Graduation Requirements

Two Graduation Tracks To Meet The Needs of Our Students

College Preparatory
General Studies

ADVANTAGES has two graduation tracks. High school students planning to attend a post-secondary institution must complete our College Preparatory requirements. Our General Education track is for students looking for a high school diploma without anticipating college.

College Preparatory Track

Our College Preparatory track is for students needing a rigorous study program in preparation for post-secondary education. ASI follows the University of California system for course requirements for graduation. These are subject to change. Our registrar’s office maintains the most current requirements to ensure our students are ready for their post-high school endeavors.

English / Language Arts: 4 Credits

Four credits of college-preparatory English

*No more than one credit of ESL-type courses can be used to meet this requirement


Mathematics: 4 Credits

Must include the following areas:

  • Algebra I, Integrated Math I, or equivalent
  • Algebra II, Integrated Math II, or equivalent
  • Geometry, Integrated Math II, or equivalent
  • 4th credit of mathematics (student’s choice)


Sciences: 3 Credits

Two credits of college-preparatory science

Must include or integrate the following in two of these three subjects:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics

*One credit of approved interdisciplinary or earth and space sciences coursework can meet one credit of the requirement.


Social Sciences: 3 Credits

Option 1

  • One semester of World or European History + one semester of Geography and World Cultures
  • One credit of U.S. History
  • One semester of U.S. Civics or U.S. Government
  • One semester of Economics

Option 2

  • One credit of World or European History
  • One semester of U.S. History + one semester of Geography and World Cultures
  • One semester of U.S. Civics or U.S. Government
  • One semester of Economics


World Languages: 2 Credits

Two credits of the same language other than English are required. (Three credits/3rd level of high school instruction recommended)

*American Sign Language and classical languages, such as Latin and Greek, are acceptable. *Courses taken in the seventh and eighth grades may be used to fulfill this requirement


Visual and Performing Arts: 1 Credit

One credit (2 semesters) of visual and performing arts chosen from the following disciplines: dance, drama/theater, music, interdisciplinary arts, or visual art

Physical Education / Health: 2 Credits

Two credits of physical education/health

*Must include one semester of health
*Requirements are subject to change to align with State / National updates

**Semester = .5 credit


Electives: 1 Credit

Electives include courses beyond department requirements.

COLLEGE PREPARATORY Total: 20 Credits   

English — 4 Credits

Math — 4 Credits

Sciences — 3 Credits

Social Sciences — 3 Credits

Physical Education / Health — 2 Credits

Visual and Performing Arts — 1 Credit

World Languages — 2 Credits 

Elective — 1 Credit

General Studies Track

Our General Studies track is for students not planning on attending a four-year university directly after high school graduation. With the general studies diploma, students can attend a community college or trade school, join the military, or go straight into the workforce. In addition, the requirements for our general studies diploma are significantly less than the college prep diploma.

English: 3 Credits
Three credits in the areas of English / Language Arts

Mathematics: 2 Credits
One credit of Algebra I, Integrated Math I, or equivalent
One credit of Mathematics, student’s choice

Sciences: 2 Credits
Complete at least two courses in the areas of biological and physical sciences


Social Sciences: 3 Credits
Option 1

  • One semester of World or European History + one semester of Geography and World Cultures
  • One credit of U.S. History
  • One semester of U.S. Civics or U.S. Government
  • One semester of Economics

Option 2

  • One credit of World or European History
  • One semester of U.S. History + one semester of Geography and World Cultures
  • One semester of U.S. Civics or U.S. Government
  • One semester of Economics

World Language, Visual and Performing Arts, Career and Technical Education: 1 Credit
One credit in the area of world language, visual and performing arts, or career technical education. To satisfy the minimum course requirement, a credit in American Sign Language shall be deemed a course in a foreign language


Physical Education / Heath: 2 Credits
Two credits in the area of physical education
*Health courses can count toward the physical education requirement
*Requirements are subject to change to align with State / National updates
